IPMA Announce 2023 Performers

PROVIDENCE, RI (USA) - The International Portuguese Music Awards (IPMA) has recognized music produced by artists of Portuguese descent from around the globe since 2013. The internationally televised event will be hosted in Providence, Rhode Island for the second time. Nearly 10% of the population in Rhode Island has ancestry from Portugal, and Portuguese is the third most spoken language in the state.

 

There are thirteen award categories including rock, rap, fado, pop, music video, and best new talent. Artists have until November 30 to submit their music to be considered for nomination.

 

The organization held a launch party at the Rhode Island Convention Center to announce the details for the next awards show. Those in attendance were treated to live performances from Fernando Daniel and Rebecca Correia. IPMA will feature a world-class performer lineup.

 

Marisa Liz has been a coach on The Voice Portugal since 2014. She was the lead singer of the pop rock band Amor Electro until 2019, and recently released her first single in her new solo venture.

 

Plutonio has launched hit after hit in the rap scene and has been experimenting with afrobeats, which has become increasingly popular in Portugal. His third full-length album from 2019 "Sacrifício: Sangue, Lágrimas & Suor" contained four singles that entered the Portuguese Top 10 and were certified either gold or platinum. In 2021, he was nominated for the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Portuguese Act.

 

Ruby Anderson is known for her old soul feel and sultry voice. This Luso-Canadian gained recognition as a finalist on Rise 2 Fame Youth Talent Search, after which she would sign with MDC Music in Toronto. She was nominated in the IPMA “Pop” category in 2022.

 

Eratoxica is a New England-based rock band with six albums to their name. They routinely tour in the United States, Canada, and in the Azores. They performed at the first IPMA in 2013.

 

Diogo Piçarra is a multi-platinum recording artist and has been a coach on The Voice Portugal since 2019. In 2018 and 2021, he was awarded the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Portuguese Act. He has hit some of the biggest music festival stages such as Rock in Rio Lisboa.

 

Toy has a fifty-year career that includes participating in several TV and radio programs and travelling to South Africa, Canada, and across Europe to perform.

 

Pedro Abrunhosa has a music career that spans back to the 80s that earned him an IPMA “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2015. At one point he was one of the best-selling artists in the Portuguese record-industry. Abrunhosa is a co-founder of the Jazz School of Porto.

 

Dulce Pontes is one of Portugal’s most international singers and has had prominent collaborations with artists such as Andrea Bocelli, Caetano Veloso, and Cesária Évora. In 1991, she represented Portugal in the Eurovision Song Contest. Pontes is credited with contributing to the revival of fado music in the 90s. Her song "Canção do Mar" appeared on the soundtrack of the Hollywood film Primal Fear, starring Richard Gere.

 

The eleventh annual International Portuguese Music Awards is slated for Saturday, May 20, 2023 at the historic Providence Performing Arts Center and the after-party will be held at The Strand Ballroom & Theatre. The prestigious event follows past editions of the show that have included participation from countless distinguished performers including João Pedro Pais, world renowned guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, and Daniela Mercury, who is one of the best-selling female artists of all time in Brazil.
